The Bay Area is blessed with enough open road to satisfy even the most
avid motorcycle enthusiast. Choosing which route will be your biggest
challenge! And not surprisingly, most every road trip listed here affords
fabulous views of natural scenic wonders. Our two motorcycle rental companies
can provide all the details for touring Northern California.
Pt. Reyes Seashore, Lucas Valley Road (Marin County)
From San Francisco, take Highway 101 north to the Lucas Valley Road exit
then go west into the foothills, past Nicasio Reservoir, until you dead-end
at Petaluma Road. Then, turn left and continue to Point Reyes through
farm country and redwoods. Marin Headlands and Mt. Tamalpais, Muir Woods
(Marin County) - Highway 1 Go over the Golden Gate Bridge - 1st exit.
Under 101 they up over the Headlands. Circle route will take you back
to 101. Then North on 101 to the Highway 1 - Mill Valley Exit. Follow
the signs to Mt. Tamalpais, Muir Woods or Stinson Beach.
Wine Country (Napa and Sonoma Counties)
Tour either Napa or Sonoma Valleys. Combine great food, fabulous wine
and touring the countryside 101 North to Highway 37 Exit. Turn off at
Sears Point Raceway to go to southern entrance to either Napa or Sonoma
Valley.
Bolinas, Fairfax, Stinson Beach (Marin County)
Take 101 North to Fairfax: Larkspur Ferry Exit, head up the northern foothills
of Mount Tamalpais, passing the turnoff for Bon Tempe Lake then arriving
at the Alpine Dam overlook. Emerge in coastal foothills, pass the junction
at Ridgecrest Boulevard, and then continue to Highway 1 to the north end
of Bolinas Lagoon. Back to San Francisco through Stinson Beach and Mill
Valley on Highway 1.
Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35 - south of San Francisco)
Going south on Highway 280 from San Francisco, take the Half Moon Bay
Road exit uphill to Skyline Blvd and head south through the Redwoods!
At the intersection of Skyline Blvd. and Kings Mountain Road (Highway
92), you will be at the unofficial gathering place in the Bay Area for
motorcyclists, the infamous Alice's Restaurant. Your options from this
point on include: Going south along Skyline to Congress Springs Road,
then west onto Highway 236 into Big Basin Redwoods State Park and finally
extend your trip to Santa Cruz. Take Highway 1 back to SF. If traveling
north on highway 1 be advised of fog, slow traffic and cold weather. Going
west on Highway 92 to Highway 1, then north to San Francisco or south
to Santa Cruz. Going south on Highway 35 to Alpine Road, then west on
the road that becomes Pescadero Creek Road and on to Highway 1.
Mount Diablo State Park (East Bay)
From SF go across the Bay |Bridge to Oakland - Highway 80 to Highway 24
to Walnut Creek. Take 680 south, exit in Danville onto Mount Diablo Road
and follow the signs for Mt. Diablo State Park. For a few dollars, you
can ride up to the 3,900 foot summit. Talk about views!
49 Mile Drive
Designed as a self-guided tour of the city's major landmarks, San Francisco's 49 Mile Scenic Drive is the ideal introduction to the city, particularly for a motorcyclist. See the most photogenic sites at your own pace and without the confines of windows. The drive includes:

Drive the full 49 miles or customize the trip to your tastes - make it a full day or any portion of one.The 49 Mile Scenic Drive is clearly marked along the highway as a landmark with easy-to-remember signs depicting a white sea gull with an orange beak and "49 MILE" in blue and white at numerous sites and corners. Try to avoid the downtown area during the weekday rush hours from 7 to 9am and 4 to 6pm.
